Here is the reply I got from the Mayor. Don't let it discourage you. Remember, he says the Commission did not formally take up the issue. Once we get enough people against this, he will change his mind.
Dear Audrey,
I appreciate your concern for the environment and your desire to provide your family with fresh eggs. As you have found out from the City Staff we do have an ordinance prohibiting keeping fowl, including chickens, in the City. I understand that you have also been advised that our ordinance does not allow the City to waive the "no chickens" section even with consent of your neighbors. The City simply can not selectively enforce its ordinances even when some residents would like that done.
The issue of keeping chickens in the City came up earlier this year. While the City Commission did not formally take up the issue of amending the ordinance I did not sense any interest on the part of the other City Commissioners in considering amending the ordinance to allow keeping of chickens in certain limited situations. Personally while I appreciate your desire to keep chickens, I feel that such activities are not appropriate in the City. I am sorry that this is not the answer you hoped for.
