By the way, I forgot to mention, feeding them is also very expensive. You also need to have a place for them to stay.

I live in Benton Township and I raise chickens, I have 21 of them. We have 9 acres, you need a lot of land and you need to know what you're doing. It is a lot harder then you think. Ours are free range and we let them go around the property. You have to watch out for predators: raccoons, weasel's, and even oppossum. We've had our whole flock killed off before because of raccoons and oppossums and found them in the act eating our birds. Don't get over your head, it's a lot harder then it looks.

Hi Audrey - I first heard about your petition to legalize the ability to raise your own chickens, but I couldn't sign or vote because at the time I didn't live in St. Joe. (I do now.) I also have read "Eating Animals" (mentioned in a comment below), as well as other books about the food industry, particularly the meat industry. It's prompted me to become vegetarian because I won't support the way meat is produced. What you're doing is a really good thing. I don't think many people are willing to take a stand and have a say about how their food is produced. You are making it that much easier for people to produce their own food in their own backyards, without having to rely on harmful, industrial methods. Hi Audrey - through Facebook I heard of your efforts to legalize chickens in your town. Good for you! A couple of years ago, I read a book called Eating Animals, and soon decided to get some hens because of the EXTREME cruelty suffered by laying hens in commercial egg production. My husband and I started raising six chickens last year, and we LOVE them. We got them when they were 2 days old. I think it's GREAT that you are fighting for this cause! We keep our hen house & yard very clean, and we've had no vermin or pests. I wish you the best of luck in your work to get this law changed!
